12th Fail box office collection Day 1: Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Vikrant Massey’s film emerges as a surprise package, earns Rs 1 crore

12th Fail box office collection Day 1: While it was expected that Kangana Ranaut's Tejas would easily take the lead this Friday, Vidhu Vinod Chopra's new film has emerged as a surprise package.

The inspiring drama 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey as an IPS aspirant, was released in theatres on Friday, along with Kangana Ranaut’s aerial actioner Tejas. While it was expected that the higher-profile Tejas would handily outperform 12th Fail, the difference between the two films is marginal.

Helmed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, 12th Fail has earned Rs 1 crore on its opening day, as per the industry tracker Sacnilk. 12th Fail managed an overall occupancy of 9.09% in the Hindi-speaking market. By comparison, Kangana’s Tejas stood just Rs 25 lakh ahead of the Vikrant Massey-starrer as it earned Rs 1.25 crore on Friday, and registered a lower occupancy.

The national chains — PVR and Cinepolis — alone registered collections of Rs 75 lakh by 10 pm on Friday, shared Pinkvilla. In times when it is assumed that only larger-than-life spectacles are pulling people to the cinema halls, 12th Fail has proved otherwise, that too with a limited number of shows. The film released in only 600 screens in comparison to Tejas, which had a much wider release.

The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Anurag Pathak, and draws from the struggles of millions of students who attempt the UPSC entrance exam. The film’s protagonist Manoj (Massey) flunks his 12th board exams but doesn’t lose hope. He restarts his academic journey and appears for the toughest competitive exam – UPSC.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s previous directorial, Shikara, also found takers when it was released in the cinema halls. It earned Rs 1.20 cr on its opening day and ended its run with a collection of Rs 8.15 cr, just ahead of the first lockdown in 2020.12th Fail is expected to get a better response from the audience over the weekend given the favourable reviews it has received. The Indian Express’ film Shubhra Gupta gave the film a 3-star rating and wrote in her review, “Vikrant Massey-starrer cleaves close to ground reality, with characters that make you feel that they’ve wandered off the street, dishing out life-lessons laced with dollops of inspiration.”

Actor Kamal Haasan also praised the film and said, “Thank you Vinod Chopra for making a film like this. It brings back hope in filmmakers like me to confidently go ahead and do what you love the most.”
